Spicy Bitter Melon with Zucchini

Bitter melon was our CSA adventure of the week. It’s an ugly if cool looking veggie. I asked for Twitter suggestions about it, and a friend said to saute with mustard seed, turmeric and chili powder. I took that advice, while adding a few touches. Tasty preparation, but the veggie’s bitterness is still a bit of an acquired taste for me (that I haven’t yet acquired).

2 small bitter melons, halved and seeds scooped out, sliced

1/2 onion, sliced

1/2 zucchini, cut into half moons

mustard seeds, to taste

chili powder, to taste

turmeric, to taste

salt and pepper

splash soy sauce

splash broth

squeeze lemon juice

a bit of sugar

olive oil (just a tsp or two)

Heat oil in pan. Saute onion a minute. Add veggies and spices and saute (add a little broth). At this point, I started tasting and adjusting, which is where the lemon juice, soy and sugar came in. Serve warm.
